Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 2026

Cape Trail is operated by Capetures (Pty) Ltd, South Africa.

Information we collect

When you create a Cape Trail account, we may collect:

  • Email address
  • Display name
  • Profile information you choose to provide
  • Route completions and challenge participation data
  • Self-reported finish times you choose to submit for the leaderboard
  • Photos, comments, and content you choose to submit

If you choose to connect your Strava account, we may collect:

  • Strava athlete ID
  • Profile information provided through Strava authorization
  • Activity information required to verify route completions
  • Activity timestamps, distance, elevation gain, elapsed time, and related challenge verification data

Strava connection: what this means before you connect

Before you connect your Strava account, here is what you should know:

  • What we collect: your Strava athlete ID, basic profile information, and the activity data needed to verify completion of Cape Trail routes (such as timestamps, distance, elevation, and elapsed time).
  • How we collect it: through Strava's official authorization process (OAuth) when you connect your account, and through activity updates Strava sends us afterwards.
  • How to withdraw consent: disconnect Strava at any time through your Strava account settings or your Cape Trail account settings. Once disconnected, we stop receiving new activity data from Strava.
  • How to request deletion: email howzit@capetrail.com to request deletion of your Strava-related data.
  • Confirmation of deletion: we will confirm in writing once a deletion request has been completed.

How we collect information

Information is collected when:

  • You create a Cape Trail account
  • You submit content to Cape Trail
  • You join a challenge
  • You connect your Strava account through Strava OAuth authorization
  • Strava sends activity updates to Cape Trail after you have authorized access
  • You submit a finish time for display on the leaderboard

Leaderboard submissions

Route completions verified through Strava are private by default and are never automatically published. A leaderboard entry — your display name and a finish time — is created only when you submit one yourself from your Cape Trail profile. The time displayed is the one you enter; it is not pulled automatically from your Strava activity. You can remove a leaderboard entry you've submitted at any time from your profile.

How we use information

We use your information to:

  • Operate Cape Trail challenges
  • Verify route completions
  • Display challenge progress
  • Display leaderboard entries you choose to submit
  • Provide support and account management
  • Improve the operation and security of Cape Trail

We do not sell your personal information.

We do not use Strava data for advertising purposes.

We do not use Strava data for artificial intelligence or machine learning systems.

Strava may also independently collect and use data about how Cape Trail uses the Strava API, in accordance with Strava's own privacy policy.

FAQ search analytics

Cape Trail may log anonymous FAQ search terms to understand which questions visitors are asking and to improve our support content. These logs are not linked to your IP address, and we do not store IP addresses for FAQ searches.

Strava integration

Cape Trail only accesses Strava data after you explicitly authorize the connection.

You may revoke Cape Trail's access at any time through your Strava account settings or through your Cape Trail account settings.

If Strava access is revoked, Cape Trail will stop receiving new activity data from Strava.

Data retention

We retain only the information necessary to operate Cape Trail and provide challenge functionality.

Strava-related data is retained only as necessary to support challenge participation, route verification, account functionality, and legal obligations.

Your rights

You may request:

  • A copy of your personal data
  • Correction of inaccurate information
  • Deletion of your account and associated data
  • Removal of your Strava-connected data
  • Removal of a leaderboard entry

Requests can be made by emailing howzit@capetrail.com.

Account deletion

You may delete your Cape Trail account through your account settings or by contacting howzit@capetrail.com.

When your account is deleted, we will remove your personal information, challenge participation records, leaderboard entries, and Strava-related data, except where retention is required by law.

We aim to complete deletion requests within 30 days, and will confirm in writing once a request has been completed. If we need to retain certain information for longer due to a legal obligation, we will let you know.

Cape Trail and Strava are separate, independent organisations

Cape Trail and Strava each independently decide how we handle the personal data we are responsible for. We are not jointly responsible for each other's handling of your data, and each of us is separately responsible for complying with applicable data protection laws.
